A stand-up built for a room full of people at the same desk at the same hour doesn't translate cleanly onto a team spread across five time zones. Someone is always dialing in at an hour that isn't really their morning, half paying attention to a meeting that exists mostly so everyone can hear three sentences meant for one other person.

The teams that have actually solved this didn't find a better video call format — they moved the update out of a meeting entirely, into a shared channel anyone can read on their own schedule. The stand-up's real job, surfacing blockers, turns out not to need everyone in the room at once.

What's harder to replace asynchronously is the five minutes of unplanned conversation that used to happen right after the meeting ended. That's the part still looking for its replacement, and no tool has quite nailed it yet.
